Why this title?
The title refers to two levels of the story. First, it describes the outward world of daily train journeys: people sit beside one another, share the same space and time, and yet know almost nothing about each other. Their collective silence becomes a symbol of distance, anonymity and the tendency to look away in everyday life.
Second, the silence stands for what is hidden: secrets, suppressed truths, concealed identities and unspoken guilt. As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that far more lies beneath the routine of commuting—both within a complex investigation and within a man who begins to doubt his own perception.
